A Flower Pot Fairy Garden

Flowerpot fairy garden

Sometimes it’s the smallest things that capture a child’s imagination, and in this case, it’s the smallest garden with the smallest fairy inside.

We made this little flowerpot garden using a kit which we bought from a craft fair at Calderstones Park last weekend. Amongst other things, it came with a tiny ladder made from wire and twigs, a teeny washing line, moss-effect rock and the best bit – some little handmade toadstools for the fairies to frolic between.

Now if you’re thinking fairies are just for little girls, think again because it was actually my son whose imagination it captured first. When he saw it alongside lots of tiny gardens and terrariums made up by a lady called Crafty Mrs Christmas, his eyes widened and he didn’t stop talking about it until I bought one.

My arm wasn’t difficult to twist as I have been thinking about how we could make a miniature garden outside and this seemed like the perfect, easy and very affordable option.

As soon as we got home the garden bits and bobs were out of the box and Sam was busy arranging them on a tray in the lounge as a bit of a practice run. You could say it was a bit of training in early garden design, which is good if you ignore the fact my floor became sprinkled in gravel in the process! Sam being Sam, he wasn’t content with the materials he was given so after a bit of browsing on Pinterest (yes, really, he is a true maker and loves it!) he whipped up a cardboard tree stump house for the fairies to sleep in.

This led to a trip to the garden centre for a new pot to house the garden, and a few flowers to go in this and my other pots, which badly needed doing after being neglected over the winter.

We came back with some little pink and white daisies for the fairy pot – I was looking for an alpine or something similar but perhaps they are more suited for indoor gardens. If you’re making your garden in a terrarium (a glass bowl or box which you keep inside) apparently plants which like humidity are best, like succulents, but if you’re using a pot outside, then choose something easy to look after and relatively small.

Once the daisies were in, Sam and Flo tried to share the job of arranging the fairy ‘furniture’ alongside. Sharing isn’t the easiest for either of them but they got there in the end – Sam likes to direct and Flo is quite happy to help, so long as she’s helped to think it’s her idea. We planned to buy a little fairy to go in but we were luckily given one by our kind neighbour Liz, and the little lady (now called Violet) is now installed and chilling in her happy place by the front door.

So there you have it – our flowerpot fairy garden. All you need to do now is make a wish…

x Julia

Love it, Julia, and the pictures are wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing. May it bring you many many months of excitement and interest. And I completely agree that fairy gardens are not just for girls! My 8 year old son loves his, and his little friends who come to visit, both boys and girls (and feline). x

I adore this idea, Julia!! It’s simply so cute. I think my boys would love it, too. I might have them make one each next half term. The washing line and larder are just lovely. I totally want to do one for myself, too.

I adore this, although I think Maddie would nibble away on all the pretty things. It reminds me of being little in school and making easter gardens with the fluffy yellow chicks Xx #HomeEtc
