Five under 5

Five under £5 for September

Sunflowers for September

Sunflowers for September

September is here and it’s fair to say my five things under a fiver this month just had to include these gorgeous sunflowers. It may be coming into autumn but today has been so warm, and I thought I’d bring a bit of that sunshine inside with these big blooms.

This is the first year in ages that we haven’t grown our own sunflowers (did I mention that I once won a prize at primary school for growing the tallest one?) but with the move and everything, gardening at the old house just wasn’t on my radar.

Now we have been in the new house for more than a month, it is starting to feel less new and a little more like home. I do love having fresh flowers around though and have absolutely no problem in buying them for myself! These were £4 in Marks and Spencers.

Hooray for Today card

Blackberries

I’ve been buying a lot of cards lately, not necessarily to send but just to have in in case I need to send one! There was the incident last week where I accidentally thought it was my friend Imogen’s birthday 30 days after the actual event, so sent her a card on the wrong day. I think I sent one on the right day too, who knows, my memory is not the best when it comes to these sorts of things.

This card says Hooray for Today, which is maybe not that fitting if you have read my last, rather miserable and self-indulgent blog post (sorry), but I have been feeling brighter since I wrote that so why not hooray for any day? Love the colour anyway, and it was about £2 in Funky Pigeon, a shop whose name always makes me laugh. I mean you can’t say the name without singing the ‘funky pigeon dot com’ song, right?

The blackberries were reduced in the supermarket this afternoon, and we all love them so thought I’d have them. They are an autumn favourite too, and I keep spying local spots which would be brilliant for blackberrying.

Elle Decoration and homes mags

I couldn’t resist trying this lemon, lime and mint soda from M&S either, which I have to say is great on its own but perfect with gin (like most things).

The last things on my list this month are the interiors magazines I can’t stop buying for inspiration. Elle Decoration is one of my favourites for chic design, and House Beautiful is a good one to check out some practical and probably more affordable buys.

What have you been buying this month? I would love it if you wanted to share your own Five under £5 with me, either in a photo on social media or a blog post. I usually publish this post on the 5th of each month so sorry I am so late! I blame the school holidays, which have totally thrown any kind of writing routine I may have had.

Anyway if you fancy joining in, please let me know you have and comment on a few other posts. Please tag any posts on instagram or twitter #fiveunder5 so I can easily find them. Thank you!

x Julia

I collect up cards, too. But then forget I have them and pop out and buy more when it’s someone’s birthday. Must try that lemon, lime and mint drink! xx

I love the sunflowers and the sound of the lemon, lime and mint soda. I’ve just read your past post too and wanted to say you are doing great. It’s never easy and you are entitled to let people know how you are really feeling, life isn’t always roses (or sunflowers) but with all you’ve been through it’s obvious that one day you will be ok, just take your time x

I love the card and love seeing the sunflowers in the shops too. I nearly picked some up in Aldi the other day and I’m regretting not getting them now. I keep meaning to join in again Julia – the days are getting away from me!! It’s a little easier with Lucas back at school so I’ll try and round up some bits this afternoon to photograph 😉 xx

I never think to buy sunflowers, and I really don’t know why as they are beautiful and bright. The lemon soda sounds so refreshing, and yes I can imagine it tastes gorgeous with gin. Love the card too. I tend to stockpile cards and then forget I have them lol x

I have a huge box of cards. Mainly with whatever age my sons are for those last minute birthday parties for their friends!

I love sunflowers too, they are guaranteed to cheer anyone up.
Yes, I now have the Funky Pigeon song in my head thanks 🙂
I’m glad it’s not just me who is getting mixed up with birthdays – I used to be so good, but my memory just fails me I couldn’t even remember my youngest’s second middle name the other day, oops.

I daren’t look at interiors magazines as they make me lust after lots of things I either can’t afford, can’t justify or don’t have space for.

I’ve been a fan of your 5 under £5 posts for a while and I finally joined in this month

Julia I know I’m always saying this but I really want to join in with 5 under 5! I must get myself organised. Okay, I love those sunflowers and I do the exact same thing with cards. I always stock up when I’m in M&S. xx
