Me and Mine – a portrait for May

Portrait - May

Portrait - May

As most of you will know, my husband Roger is being cared for at our local hospice but is able to have regular visits home when he feels well enough. These are treasured moments where we can relax a bit more and be ourselves, just spend some time together as a family and try to make the best of a truly awful situation. As I wrote last week, it’s about making the most of the ordinary moments that can often be taken for granted.

I’m trying to record as much of these moments as possible, taking lots of photos, making videos and trying to drink in the family time that feels so precious.

When one of our close friends Colin McPherson offered to come round and take some professional shots of us all together during Roger’s first visit home, I agreed straight away as it’s so important to me that we have some really good quality images of us all to look back on.

Colin is an independent photographer and visual artist, whose work is often seen in the Sunday supplements and indeed his own exhibitions, and being a good friend I knew he would be able to capture us better than anyone in our own environment. You can see Sam clutching his new Darth Vader toy and Florence having a good old look round him to Rog and I. I love that we are laughing in the pictures and look happy and relaxed.

I’m sharing some of them here, as I join in for the first time in the Me and Mine photography project.

I hope you like them as much as we do.

x Julia

They’re just lovely, Julia. I think the top one is my favourite because it captures a real family moment rather than you all looking at the camera waiting for the photo to be taken. Special pictures x
