Rainbow Dash and Retro Toys

IMG_1549.JPG

I was born in the 70s and a little girl in the 80s, so all my favourite toys were things like Sindy dolls, Cabbage Patch Kids, Huggy Bear (that link by the way is to the V&A, meaning Huggy is now a museum piece, eek) and My Little Ponies.

My little girl found a mini My Little Pony in her stocking this Christmas morning – and when we went over to my parents’ house a few hours later, my mum had one of my old ones ready to give her too. I used to love My Little Ponies, and though I remember having a pink one with white flowers (I think) on its bottom called Cotton Candy, I don’t remember having this blue one with the multi-coloured disco mane – which fans will know is Rainbow Dash.

The little one I bought for my daughter has wings, a new addition, and more designs on its body but the colours have stayed the same. I have to say baby gal hasn’t taken too much of an interest yet but I’m working on it. Christmas morning for her was all about how much chocolate she could find, even busting her lip as she tried to climb on a chair and reach some more of the stuff hidden on top of the fridge! A festive war wound.

Another old favourite we unwrapped this year was an Etch-a-Sketch. My sister and I spent many hours playing with ours when we were kids, and this one kept my son busy for ages. He made a picture of a fort, which to be honest is pretty much all you can make on these things as they only make straight lines. Even with all the drawing games available on the iPad these days, he still found it fun which shows it stood the test of time to some extent.

Did you get any toys for your children which you played with when you were small?

X Julia

Ah thank you for the mention and link back!! We really did have the best toys back in the 80s, didn’t we!?

What have they done to My Little Ponies? They’ve been on a massive diet in the past thirty years!!

    Great post xxx

I had loads of my little ponies! I can’t stand how they look now. So many of the retro toys have had modern makeovers and look a bit sexy. Have you seen the new rainbow brite??? My mum kept all of my toys in the loft and so now mine have all of the originals which I love! Just waiting for them to be a bit older so I can get down the Sylvanians!!! Woo Hoo!!!

I adored My Little Ponies when I was little. I had a soft toy of Parasol. My parents gave her to me for being such a good girl when I had my tonsils taken out. Laughable as I reacted really badly to the anesthetic and actually hit a nurse. Anyway, I digress! I am not sure about the modern My Little Ponies. I don’t know why they had to change them. But that could be me being an old grump. Hugs Mrs H xxxx

I know what you mean, they are a bit more slimmed down and jazzed up! I think we look back at the old ones with love but in reality our mums were probably thinking they were a bit naff then! Xx

I was never lucky enough to be the proud owner of a pony but my three year old niece is wild on them. Her favourite is twilight sparkle… and there is now a princess pony!
As a special treat we sometimes take her the my little pony mag. She adores it!

This post really made me smile: I recently started reminiscing and went through all my old ponies too – I had Cotton Candy and a few others, although my favourite Princess Aquamarine was lost or given away at some point. My four year old son was completely enraptured by them and carried them around everywhere for a few months! He seems to have moved on now though, which is probably for the best…
