Styling my work space with a Kit Out My Office desk

I haven’t had my own desk space for years but since I had the garage of our home converted into a playroom, I’ve managed to claim a corner of it for myself and create my own little work space.

The renovations were finished about a month ago and I’ll post about those soon, so you can see the finished product. From the outside the room looked like a garage, from the inside it had laminate flooring and painted walls, but no insulation or windows and it was pretty cold. If you’d like to you can read about the first stages of the work here.

Now it’s done, I’m so pleased with how it looks and we have another good-sized room to use as family space. Having a desk to myself though means I have somewhere to sit and work, which isn’t the sofa or the kitchen table, and somewhere to store all my paperwork and bits and bobs which usually get lost around the house!

The desk is from Kit Out My Office, and it’s called a UCLIC Aspire Desk and base unit with door. I chose the natural oak but it comes in 16 colours including high gloss white, several bright colours and a range of wood finishes. I love that it has a pretty light looking frame so it doesn’t look too solid in the room, but has the cupboard so things like files and cables can be hidden inside.

It will be great for my writing work, but also as a space for my seven-year-old, Sam, to do his homework and concentrate his many craft activities. His bedroom is a little bit too small for a desk at the moment, perhaps as he gets older he may want fewer toys in there and make more room for a desk, but at the moment he is more than happy to share mine.

My new Kit Out My Office desk

I’m using one of my dining chairs at the moment to sit on, which is an Ikea Ingolf chair in white. I picked up a really nice pale grey desk lamp a few weeks ago in the John Lewis sale too. I think it was about Β£17 as it was ex-display, and has a long-lasting LED bulb.

My desk is right next to the electric radiator and the window, so not only is it nice and light but it’s super warm too. Perfect to help my writing goals of 2017!

I’ve hung some shelves on the wall above, which are the Industrial Wood and Metal Shelves from Cox and Cox. They’re perfect to add interest to the wall and house some of my favourite things, like pictures, plants and candles. I love how they look one on top of the other like this, and they were really easy to fix up (just ask my Dad!).

Since I set my desk up, it has of course been decorated with no end of small toys and Flos favourite Barbies. The My Little Pony was wearing a washi tape hat the other day – naturally I didn’t think my own grown-up desk space could last forever.

x Julia

Oh I love it. I’ve got a little work area but it really needs sorting and I feel inspired after reading this. It really does look amazing. I love your metal caddy too. I am going to sort mine out tonight πŸ™‚

Your work space is really inspiring Julia.
I am intrigued that you have some Jo Malone and wondered which is your favourite?
I so miss the discontinued Blue agave and cocoa.

Ooh it’s lovely. My office (which used to be a playroom) has now been turned into a bedroom so that my three girls have a bedroom each. Definitely worth it for them, but now I have no workspace to store all my stuff so it just gets moved around the house from pile to pile depending on whether I’m in the kitchen or on the sofa doing my work! It really is as simple as a little desk ad a couple of shelves though isn’t it? Hmm…thinking cap on. I WILL have a little space to call my own πŸ™‚

It’s my first time visiting your blog and you’ve inspired me to do something about the little room that I call my office but in reality no work gets done there only a shed load of procrastinating. It’s in desperate need of decorating and de cluttering. My desk takes up half of what’s already a little room and as for any style, well there isn’t any. Im hopping over to Kit Out My Office to take a look at those fab desks. Now to go and read some more of your posts. I should be getting ready for work, but that can keep! x

I love discovering a fabulous new blog even when I’m probably years older than its regular readers ! I loved this post and its inspired me to give my little office the revamp that it so desperately needs. I call it an office, but in reality very little work takes place there whilst a lot of procrastinating does! I’m going to pop over to Kit Out My Office and take a look at those fab desks. My present one is 20 years old and takes up half of the room! Looking forward to reading more of your lovely posts. x

What a lovely little area, I love desks near natural light.

You’ve made a really cosy corner here, very feminine too! I love the blue caddy thing at the side as well. Hehe, I know what you mean, those toys just creep up everywhere don’t they!

LOVE love it!!!!! Looks fab! So fresh and I love the wood tones with the white. The whole totally white thing is a little too stark for me. It’s so nice when it’s warmed up a little. It’s the PERFECT environment for you to write your book!!!! πŸ˜‰ xxxx #HomeEtc
