Styling the Seasons – February

I love the sweet smell of hyacinths and even though I have maybe three pots of them around my house, I couldn’t resist buying these fresh cut ones the other day. They’re such a pretty shade of pink and there’s something about their little flowers that cheers me up.

I think it might have something to do with the memory of my primary school teachers putting their hyacinth bulbs in the class store cupboard for the winter, then emerging with something so lovely and spring-like when we were still all wrapped up in our thick tights and mittens (always sheepskin, always on a string).

This is the first time I’m joining in with Styling the Seasons, which is a series of monthly posts started by Katy from Apartment Apothecary and Charlotte from Lotts and Lots, showing a surface of your home styled with things which reflect that period of time for you.

Well this being the month of love, I couldn’t really not include flowers, could I? They may not be roses (too predictable) but some of my other items are rather rosy. I’m in love with my new perfume from Elie Saab, a light floral with a touch of rose, honey, orange blossom and jasmine. I usually find rose-scented products a bit much, but since I was sent a really lovely gift of Jurlique Rose Hand Cream and Rose Love Balm from my blogging pal Vicki, I can’t seem to get enough of it. The hand cream has such a beautiful scent, when I put some on in the morning I can smell it for hours afterwards. The Love Balm is a kind of extra moisturising treat for really dry skin, and can be used on your lips too.

As for the card, well yes it is a Valentine but as I buy my children a little something each year I found myself at the smoochy section in John Lewis the other day, feeling a little bit teary. As I picked up this card I thought straight away of Roger, and how he said he was lucky because he had the last of his days with me. How any man can say such a thing knowing they have a terminal illness just goes to show what an amazingly strong character and wonderful man he was. I bought the card, I felt I couldn’t leave it behind, but I’m not sure what I’ll do with it now. Pop it in the memory box, maybe.

I want all my lasts to be with you http://rainbeaubelle.com

So thanks to his mum for filling our home with hyacinth bulbs, and the little smell of springtime they bring.

My blanket, in case you’re wondering, is from Australian brand Coco & Cru and my vase is a jug which featured in this post last year.

I hoe you like my February style. Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day lovers!

x Julia

Yes ha ha I loved the outtake too, the card is just beautiful Julia and so meaningful to you. Do you know I love Hyacinths but I can never keep then, they just don’t last. Every year my neighbour buys me a box filled with flowering bulbs and they last a week I just sent get it, or are they only meant to last a week? xx

I maybe should have added the outtake of Flo! Next time I will! Hyacinths do only last a little while but then you can cut the stems off and plant the bulbs in the garden for next year! x

This is a beautiful post and I love everything that you have included. What a gorgeous sentiment on the card, no wonder you had to buy it Julia. I am trying to buy more fresh flowers for around the home and I must admit I have not bought hyacinths yet, I must look out for them. xx

Julia, I love your first STS post. Those flowers are glorious (my favourite colour, too) and I really enjoyed reading what this month means to you. I read the story behind the card in one of your other posts and found myself in tears – completely heartbreaking. I’m sending lots of love xxx

SO beautiful, Julia. I’m glad you decided to join in. Even if there’s chaos behind the images, it’s still nice to take a moment and appreciate something pretty. You should frame the card and put it on the wall xx
