A tassel bunting tutorial

Tassel garland tutorial

You might have seen some pictures of the tassel bunting I made for my daughter’s birthday party on my Instagram feed or blog post about the day. It’s something I’d saved to my Pinterest party board several times and when I looked into how to do it, I thought it looked pretty easy so gave it a go.

Let’s ignore the fact it took me a few hours to make one length of bunting – something my mum found highly amusing but in my defence, it was done in my usual style of working on it for five minutes then doing something else, then returning to it half an hour later. So a few hours, yes, but if you were to sit and do just that I reckon you could easily do it in under half an hour.

Here’s how. All you need is tissue paper, sellotape, scissors and string. As a guide, I used three sheets of tissue paper for this one decoration.

– Take one sheet of paper and lay it out flat. Then fold it in half lengthways, and then over in half to one side, and over again. I also tried just re-folding it into the shape it came in the packet and that worked fine too.

Cut tissue paper

– Starting from the unfolded side, cut lines up the folded tissue, stopping about 4am from the top.

– Unfold your tissue and lay it out flat, then roll it up into a tube with the tassels on either end.

– Hold your tube in the middle and twist the uncut part several times. Now fold it over to make a loop and secure with a small piece of sellotape.

Roll tissue paper

– Now you have a tassel all ready for threading onto your string. I tied mine into position on the garland to stop them from all falling into the middle and to ensure they are evenly spaced.

– Voila! Your tassel garland is ready to hang. Such a simple idea but it really does look cute for a party decoration. Let me know if you give it a try,

x Julia
