The Nonsense Show by Eric Carle

The Nonsense Show by Eric Carle

The new book by Eric Carle has proved a hit in our house – the upside down world of The Nonsense Show seems to make perfect sense to kids and the words and pictures have struck a chord like so many of his other stories.

There can’t be many children who haven’t read and loved the author’s bestselling The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I know mine love it as I did too as a child. We’ve also loved reading Mister Seahorse and my personal favourite, Papa, Please Get The Moon For Me. The illustrations are so recognisable and the story of The Nonsense Show actually builds on this artistic connection as it draws on surrealism to make little ones laugh and adults think.

The author’s new tale, published this week by Puffin Books, takes readers into a mixed-up world which is fun to read and a joy to look at. The book introduces kids to a world of silliness which has stacks of appeal. Lines such as:

‘”I’m too wet!” said the bird. “I can’t fly! It’s absurd!”

“I’m too dry! How I wish I could swim!” said the fish.’

might seem silly to you and I, but to kids who can just accept these nonsense stories they are fascinating. If you think about it, many nursery rhymes are made up of nonsense, like the cow jumping over the moon, and I don’t remember ever really wondering if that was possible when I was little.

Eric Carle Nonsense Show

Carle, who has illustrated more than 70 books and written many of them, said he created The Nonsense Show to prepare children for a lifetime of loving both words and art.

He has certainly had a hand in making children love books so far – I know in our house every book of his we have read has been a hit.

Within hours of getting our copy of his latest book, Sam, who is six, had looked through it several times and had even asked to read it to his two-year-old sister Florence. She loves choosing it to read at bedtime and has added it to the current pile of favourites in her room.

She may not want to part with hers, but we have two more copies to give away. Just enter via the rafflecopter form below. Good luck!

Oh who isn’t a fan of the Very Hungry Caterpilla? My boy in particular read this book no stop for what seems like FOR EVER!! This new release looks equally colourful, I think the illustrations are really fascinating, full of detail and will keep no-readers interested.
    Lovely review
