The family kitchen, the real election issue

With just days to go before the General Election, I’m having to wade through the regular stash of political leaflets being pushed through my door. Amid the promises to improve the NHS, cut the deficit and help the environment, the burning question still remains – which party leader has the best kitchen?

First came the photos of Ed Miliband’s kitchenette, which was later revealed to be his second kitchen saved for making “tea and snacks”, and earning him the nickname “two kitchens”.

Then David Cameron’s kitchen was dissected, before Nick Clegg’s was criticised by one commentator by being “middle-of-the-road”.

But what if someone were to take a look inside my kitchen? What would they make of it? Seeing as I’ve been mulling this over I thought I’d share my thoughts. See what you make of…

1. Our fridge, which doubles as a message board, covered in my favourite photos, drawings and memos. On the top, just seen, are copious amounts of booze and my husband’s sharps bin.

2. The worktop, pretty cluttered with kitchen gadgets, though no one could say they are so pristine they’re never used, like the Camerons’ shiny silver pans. Apart from the blender, which I’ve never used. I do have a Nutri Bullet though, which I use all the time for making spinach and banana smoothies and er, chocolate milk.

3. A huge washing machine, to handle our huge amounts of washing.

4. An equally oversized jar for tea bags, revealing we love tea, and a stash of bananas.

1. The newly acquired head statue, a gift from my husband, would perhaps be a talking point. It’s finding a temporary home on the windowsill next to the candles/cards/bowl of general tatt.

2. Our wooden dining table, bought many moons ago from Ilva, which I actually cleared for the purposes of the photo. Left the tissues in place, as they are ever-present for runny noses and tears, and Sam’s current favourite accessory, the goggles from his “gross science” kit.

3. Framed prints which we’ve collected on our travels. One from the V&A in London and another a faded papercut print from Famille Summerbelle

4. An ikea wheeled trolley full of things which have no home, like pieces of lego, pens and paper.

5. Our shelves, overloaded with books and if you look closely, Easter eggs! How have we still got those?!

6. A corner of the room which shall be known as the place where great things shall be created, aka the making table. Complete with pink plastic toy highchair and confetti balloon.

Finally, I give you a more usual picture, the one with Play Doh and chaos written all over it. Love that one.

The thing is, for most people the kitchen is the heart of the home, where dinner is served, homework is done, partied are held and ideas are born. It’s so much more than a photo.

What goes on in your kitchen?

X Julia

Great idea for a post! I wish we had a kitchen big enough for a table, ours is just about big enough for us all to stand! I hate our kitchen and not because of the decor as actually I love that but due to its size and lack of table it is not a family space. Usually ends up me in there on my own while everyone else has fun in the lounge x

I love this Julia, our kitchen is the heart of the home too, and ha ha we used to have a making table when the boys were little. I cant believe you have easter eggs left they didn’t last that long in our house, to be honest although Jack manages his sugar levels so well he really is the worst type of diabetic with his sweet tooth x

Genius post hun! Loved this so much. Your kitchen sounds like a fun place to be – can I come and stay please? Make me some Chocolate Milk?
I have postcards from the V&A that I framed and I still have some that need to be framed. I love the V&A!

Great post lovely! I can’t believe you have never used your blender ha! We use ours in exactly the same way, it is by far my favourite room and everything happens in there. We have Easter eggs left too, I usually end up melting them down and putting them in a cake, they take up so much room. I miss having a fridge door to put pictures and magnets on xx

This is such a brilliant post. I love your kitchen. It looks like a perfect family kitchen. And that last photo just shows how the kitchen should be the centre of the family home. I love it. Thanks for linking up with #SundaysStars. Hugs Mrs H xxxx
