World Book Day – The Cat in the Hat

My son takes his dressing up very seriously, and for him, getting into character for World Book Day is more than just putting on a costume – it’s weeks of talking about it, planning it and making it. Last year, he went to school dressed as the Cat in the Hat, an ensemble which was pretty easy to make, with a pair of black trousers and a top, a bit of felt and ribbon, cardboard for the hat and a YouTube tutorial in oversized millinery!

This year, he’s expecting a fantastic costume re-run, so the pressure is on. His outfit of choice? Puss in Boots. So I’m trying to fashion some sort of cat costume from brown trousers we already have and a t-shirt which I’m yet to find. I’ve tried looking for a basic top in H&M and Tesco so far but no joy. The hat we have covered, I just need a feather. The key hurdle I’m facing here is the boots, which aren’t so easy to find. Thigh-high black boots in a size 2 anyone?! This time next week, we’ll either have a fab or failed Puss in (or out of) Boots costume to show you.

Any ideas?!

X Julia

That’s an impressive costume. I’m sure you’ll come up with something… maybe a bit of faux leather from the fabric shop rouched over the top of some shoes????

Wowee I love that outfit! My son gets a bit self conscience and won’t go ‘all out’ these days. he wants to go as something understated and ‘cool’ which basically means his own clothes. This week he wants to go as Julian from Famous Five! xx

He looks great! I love making costumes too although I’ve never made a hat quite so big, I bow down to your super size millinery skills 🙂

What a fantastic costume and I love the enthusiasm your son has for World Book Day. Thankfully our school is doing WBD a week later this year, so gives me more time to get organised. I am such an uncreative mother lol x
